Sirk's Obsession

"If you can't get me Rock Hudson get me a 'Rock Hudson' type". So must have said Douglas Sirk when casting began for Imitation of Life, his follow up to uber-weepie, Magnificent Obsession. And it was done, in the form of tall dark and handsome John Gavin. Definitely a chip off the old Rock, Gavin is smitten by Lana Turner's somewhat senior charms and is there to hold things together as all manner of 'issues' are confronted by la Turner and (extended) family in the 1959 classic. Both actors went on to greater things in the sixties, Hudson in Frankenheimer's cult sci-fi Seconds and Gavin in Psycho, with the comely Janet Leigh.
