Harsh Reality

They should have known better. When the great and the good posed before Graham Sutherland, they should have realised they were sitting in front of a forensic eye. No pity, no sentiment, no favour, just the plain unvarnished truth. Sutherland was a multi-talented artist and designer, but, I believe, portraiture was his finest contribution to the artistic canon. Famously, Lady Churchill destroyed his portrait of her husband, a great shame as Churhill's place in history was already assured. We shall look into Graham Sutherland's earlier work in a future post.
